Repainting a goddess's face, adding silver leaf and a presale
The creation of Nix continued with careful attention to her face, which proved to be the most challenging aspect of this painting. I legitimately gave a little prayer to Goddess Nix and asked her to guide me in how she wanted to be seen. I want her to look regal and strong.
However, the process wasn't without its setbacks. A couple of my friends said that the mouth on Nix looked like it was an open mouth rather than the top lip, which was my intention. And after hearing this, I couldn't unsee it. So I needed to repaint the face. The lips and nose were repainted, and I am glad that now she doesn't look like she's screaming! She still gives the right expression and vibe, even though the final result changed slightly from the sketch, because of the change in medium, but that's part of what I like about working with traditional materials—they bring their own thing to it. I'm tempted to redo the eyes too, but they don't bother me enough to do that.
And finally the best part came, adding silver leaf. I tested the silver leaf on my easel before putting it on the painting. Having never used this product before, I wanted to get a feel for it. Normally, I'm much more of a gold person, but the moon is silver, so it's silver.
I was looking forward to doing the silver leaf the whole time I was painting, and I wasn't disappointed. I tried really hard to restrain myself and not just cover the whole thing in silver! The result exceeded my expectations - the silver adds really nice 3D elements that change based on the viewing angle. I love it and want to gild everything now!
This painting hasn't yet been released to the public, as I'm still working on the description and photography. It's also in the middle of the varnishing process. However, for you—my email subscribers who have followed along with the whole process—I'm making it available for presale. While the listing isn't polished, I hope you'll look past that. As a thank you for your support, I've applied a special discount.
